What Is a Same-Day Crown?

A same-day crown is a porcelain dental crown that is custom-designed and milled right here in our office while you wait. Using a digital intraoral scanner and our Planmeca Planscan and PlanMill system, Dr. Sirin prepares your tooth, scans it digitally, and designs your crown on-screen. The crown is then milled from a block of high-strength porcelain and permanently cemented, all within about two hours.

This technology replaces the traditional process of taking a putty impression, sending it to an outside lab, wearing a plastic temporary crown for weeks, and returning for a second appointment. With same-day crowns, that entire process is condensed into one visit.

How the Same-Day Crown Process Works

Step 1 - Preparing the Tooth (approximately 30 minutes)

If you have a broken tooth or a tooth that has reached the limit of what a filling can support, we will get you comfortable right away. After taking a digital X-ray to assess what is going on, Dr. Sirin will administer local anesthetic so you feel nothing. Any decay is removed, and the tooth is gently shaped to receive the crown. We typically reduce the tooth by about 1 to 1.5mm on the sides and 1.5 to 2mm on the biting surface. That is the precise thickness we need to give the porcelain its full strength.

Step 2 - Digital Scanning

Instead of pressing putty trays into your mouth, we use a small handheld camera to take a precise digital scan of your teeth in seconds. The scan captures an accurate three-dimensional model of your tooth, with none of the distortion that can occur when a traditional impression is poured in stone and shipped to a lab. If you have ever gagged on an old-school impression, you will notice the difference immediately.

Step 3 - Relax While We Design and Mill Your Crown

This is where the majority of your appointment time goes, and most of it is yours to use however you like. While Dr. Sirin and our crown designer, Monika, work on designing and milling your crown in-office, you can read, watch something, or simply rest. We will bring you a blanket, coffee, or tea. The crown is milled from a solid block of high-strength porcelain that is approximately five times stronger than older ceramic materials.

Step 4 - Try-In and Final Cementation

Before the crown goes into the furnace for final hardening and color development, we try it in your mouth to confirm the fit. If any minor adjustments are needed, we make them at that stage, before everything is finalized. Once we know it fits perfectly, the crown goes through the furnace process and is then bonded into place. Unlike older metal-based crowns, our porcelain crowns bond directly to your natural tooth structure, creating a strong, reliable seal. When you leave our office, your crown is permanent and you can eat a meal almost immediately.

Why Same-Day Crowns Are Better for You

No Temporary Crown Temporary crowns are plastic, they can fall off, they do not fit the same way as your final crown, and they sometimes allow teeth to shift slightly before the final restoration is placed. With a same-day crown, there is no temporary. The crown you leave with is the crown you keep.

One Appointment Instead of Two Freeing up your schedule for a second crown appointment is not something you have to do. The entire process, from numb tooth to permanent crown, happens in a single visit of about two to two and a half hours.

A More Comfortable Process No putty. No gagging. No sending impressions off to a lab. The digital scan is fast, accurate, and far more comfortable than traditional impression techniques.

Precision Fit, Backed by the Design on File Because your crown is designed digitally, that design stays in our system. If something unexpected ever happens to your crown, we have the file. As long as the tooth underneath is healthy, we can mill a replacement and have it ready for you quickly.

High-Strength Porcelain That Lasts The porcelain we use is exceptionally durable. Fractures are uncommon, and the bond between the crown and your natural tooth structure is strong. This is not the metal-based crown of decades past.

When Is a Crown the Right Choice?

A crown becomes the right solution when a tooth has more damage than a filling can reliably address. Often, patients arrive having had a small filling that grew over the years into a larger one, and then a larger one still. Filling material is not designed to cover that much surface area indefinitely. At some point, a crown is not just the better option, it is the one that preserves the tooth.

At Sirin Dentistry, we take a conservative approach. We do not recommend a crown until we genuinely believe it is the best path forward for the long-term health of your tooth. If a filling will do the job, we will place a filling. We also use Pulpdent, a peptide-based product that can actually remineralize early cavities and help teeth heal before a restoration becomes necessary.
