These days, celebrity dentists say getting your teeth fixed is the new ‘anti-aging procedure.‘ In other words, dental work can be more effective at achieving a younger look than getting a brow lift.
Cosmetic and aesthetic dentists like Dr. Michael Apa whose celebrity clients include Chloe, Sevigny, Lea Michele, and Vera Wang told Forbes magazine, “The goal is to create harmony within the face and reestablish youthfulness in a natural way.”
Dr. Apa has created the dental procedure called the “smile lift” which is an alternative option to plastic surgery or dermatology. Don’t believe us? Dr. Apa makes a rather convincing case in his interview.
The state our smile is in, including positioning and color of teeth, affects our appearance more than we might think. While the skin on our face inevitably ages, and in the process loses elastin and collagen, our teeth are also aging.
The fact is, that our “teeth support the lower third of the face, and over time, this support begins to collapse” according to Dr. Apa. The Smile Lift fixes this problem by shifting the position of the teeth that would more favorably provide some much-needed support to the upper lip.
When teeth begin to collapse, some people choose to have a collagen injection into the lip. This provides some fullness to the lip but it doesn’t fix the root of the problem, which is the fact that the position of the teeth has shifted and needs to be fixed. Our teeth provide the foundation and shape to our face, so shouldn’t we make sure we fix the underlying problem first?
Dr. Apa says he seeks to restore the ‘harmony’ and ‘balance’ to the face through his Smile Lift procedure. In this way, he creates his definition of a beautiful smile: one that looks most natural. He asks himself, how are the teeth complementing or detracting from this facial balance? To figure this out, Dr. Apa takes into consideration: “face shape, tooth color, tooth size, light refraction, age and skin tone.”
But literally, how does Dr. Apa ‘shift’ teeth around during his Smile Lift procedure? It sounds pretty invasive, as if teeth are literally being pulled out and replaced. But in truth, the dentist is reshaping the smile by removing small amounts of tooth material and creating very thin veneers then placing these directly on top of the teeth.
Of course, not all of us have the same access to such a procedure as the Smile Lift. So in the meantime, tackle the next biggest dental problem that ages us: discoloration. Dr. Apa recommends Crest 3D Whitestrips Professional Effects. He suggests speeding up the whitening process by using three strips a day, changing them every 15 minutes for a total of 45 minutes of wearing time (for both your bottom and top). Also, it wouldn’t hurt to invest in a good electric toothbrush if you are determined to get your smile whiter and brighter.
